The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) is an aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. It gives its name to its class, composed in principle of three aircraft carriers: the Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) and the Enterprise (CVN-80). It was named in honor of the 38th President of the United States Gerald R. Ford.
She was laid down on November 13, 2009 at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in a ceremony attended by Susan Ford Bales, daughter of Gerald R. Ford and launched on November 9, 2013.
Its construction was commissioned to replace the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), although the latter was decommissioned when the USS Gerald R. Ford. It had not yet been launched.
