IRIS‑T SLM is a German medium‑range surface‑to‑air missile system developed by Diehl Defence. It is part of the IRIS‑T family, which includes the air‑to‑air missile (IRIS‑T AAM), the short‑range surface‑launched version (SLS), the medium‑range version (SLM), and the extended‑range version (SLX).
The SLM variant is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, and guided munitions at medium ranges with very high precision.
System Components
– Launcher Vehicle: Typically a MAN 8×8 truck carrying eight vertical‑launch missile canisters.
– Missile: IRIS‑T SLM, a modified version of the IRIS‑T with a larger rocket motor, datalink guidance, and extended range.
– Radar: HENSOLDT TRML‑4D AESA radar providing 360‑degree coverage and tracking of hundreds of targets simultaneously.
– Command and Control Unit: Manages engagement, target assignment, and communication with other air‑defense assets.
Performance and Capabilities
– Maximum range: Approximately 40 km.
– Maximum engagement altitude: Approximately 20 km.
– Guidance: Imaging infrared seeker combined with datalink mid‑course updates.
– Reaction time: Very short, suitable for high‑speed threats.
– Multi‑target capability: Can engage several targets at once.
– Combat effectiveness: Reports from Ukraine indicate extremely high interception rates against drones and cruise missiles.
