The Oerlikon/Martin Marietta Anti-Tank Air Defense System (or: Air Defense, Indigenous – coverage area of its launchers, Mobile System – mobile system. US designation MIM-146 ADATS) is a short-range, dual-purpose anti-tank and surface-to-air missile system based on the M113A2 vehicle. The ADATS missile is a supersonic laser-guided missile with a range of 10 kilometers (6.2 mi), with an electro-optical sensor with TV and forward-looking infrared (FLIR). The carrier vehicle also has a search radar with an effective range of more than 25 kilometers (16 miles).
The first launch of an ADATS missile took place in June 1981. Canada was the system’s launch customer, with 36 units on the M113 chassis ordered by the Canadian Army in 1986. The system was subsequently developed and produced at a new plant in Quebec. The US Army also selected the ADATS mounted on the M3 Bradley chassis, but by the time it was ready to enter service, the end of the Cold War led the US Army to cancel its orders, after Oerlikon invested more than one billion Swiss francs in the project. [2] A small number of vehicles, many of them prototypes under development, entered service with the Canadian Army.
